This detective has become synonymous with the hard boiled detective genre, but ironically appears only once in in any literary, a novel by Dashiell Hammett. Who?

i might be wrong...but i think its SAM SPADE...haven't heard read anything related to this character ever...only vaguely recollect hearing something about the hard-boiled detective genre...where this guy was mentioned..as i said before...i could be way off..
You're absolutely right, it is Sam Spade. Despite of the reputation he has developed, the only piece of fiction he actually appears in is The Maltese Falcon.
